How to Avoid Scams in Banaras: A Practical Guide

Most people in Banaras are very helpful, but like any tourist city, a few take advantage of visitors.

In this guide

The 'VIP darshan' trick

If someone outside the temple promises 'quick darshan' for money, say no. Use services only from the official counter or website.

Forced tilak and puja

On the ghats someone may suddenly apply a tilak or start a puja, then ask for dakshina. Politely decline right at the start.

Boat fares

Before boarding, agree on how many ghats, how long and how much. If you're alone, sharing with other travellers is cheaper.

Fake Banarasi sarees

If an auto or rickshaw driver insists on taking you to a 'factory', be careful: there's usually a commission involved. For real silk, buy from a trusted shop or look for the Handloom Mark.

Autos and rickshaws

Fix the fare as soon as you leave the station, or take a prepaid or app-based auto. Vehicles can't enter many parts of the old city, so be ready to walk the last stretch.
